Day 14: Happy Singles Awareness Day!!!

“Being single can be one of the most rewarding seasons of your life, but only if you let it!” -Videllia Davis

Another year has come and gone. You’ve been dreading this coming Tuesday as you already know what you’re going to see – constant pictures of people posting their Valentine’s day gifts, videos of folks getting engaged and statuses about how happy people are (or at least how they appear to be on social media).

You want to be happy for these people, really you do, but it’s hard.  When is it going to happen to me? When will it be my turn?

Well I am here to BURST your bubble!!! I can’t tell you when it will happen to you OR when it will be your turn and guess what – NEITHER CAN YOU!!!  You cannot force something to happen any faster than God allows it to happen so why are you constantly spending your time feeling sad for yourself, shedding tears because you’re lonely, miserable because you don’t have a “title” next to your name?  The way I see it, you have one of two choices – (1) continue to be miserable or (2) LIVE YOUR LIFE!!!

Now I am not negating the fact that sometimes on this single journey it can be tough. I’m a 29-year-old single woman myself so I get it ladies.  However, life is still going on with or without us so why not go with it!  Don’t allow your relationship status or rather, lack thereof, to hold you back in life.  Being single can be one of the most rewarding seasons of your life, but only if you let it!

Instead, use this time to pursue your dreams with a fiery passion.  Spend this time traveling the world and going places that you have always wanted to go.  Take time to fall in love with yourself – learning what things you like and don’t like, what you want out of life, discovering your purpose, discovering your worth and so forth.  Above all else, use this time to teach yourself that who you are is NOT defined by whether you have a man or not. One of my favorite quotes is, “I am still a QUEEN regardless if I have a KING”. And you are exactly that beautiful.  You are still a queen and you are not defined by whether you have a man in your life. Plus, I mean, let’s be honest.  Most of those social media portrayals of relationships are fictional – if you really knew what went on behind the scenes of some of these couples, perhaps you wouldn’t covet those relationships.

So yes, I know Valentine’s day may be hard for you but do what my girls and I do. Every year, I organize a dinner for the singles in my group of friends. We do a gift exchange and also include a handwritten note to encourage that single woman on her journey. Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we get dressed up and enjoy one another’s company. It actually always ends up being a really good time.  In fact, you can read more about it here.

But if you can’t do that, then I at least wanted to send some encouraging words to you on this day.  Cheer up Queen.  Your King will come in due season. In the meantime, choose to keep on living and celebrate your singleness!

#KnowYourWorthChallenge: The single ladies and I in my circle host an event every year.  We go to a restaurant, do an activity or something and also have a gift exchange where we write encouraging notes to help on this single journey and exchange them with one another.  We never sit at home and cry about being single and you shouldn’t either! So tell me below what creative ways are you celebrating your Valentine’s Day.screenshot_20161221-135200

“Singles, Turn UP!” (It’s Valentine’s Day!)

Well it’s that time of year again – the time when all the couples post their lovey-dovey photos on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter showing us their gifts and Valentine’s day happiness (or at least the pieces of it they want us to see).

Then you have the sad and depressed singles – those who go around talking about Singles Awareness Day, staying off all the social media sites so they don’t make themselves sad or bitter by the gifts that all of their friends received.

Then you got me.

I’m not currently in a relationship…but I’m also not bitter.  For what? Because I’m single? I’m actually single by choice – because I CHOOSE to wait for God’s very best man for my life (see that post here). And just because I’m in the waiting phase, doesn’t mean that I have to be sad or bitter that I have to go home alone. It also doesn’t mean that I have to be angry and upset because I have no one to buy me a teddy bear, or tell me he loves me, etc.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I used to get sad and lonely in those years when I wasn’t in a relationship. However,  as I’ve grown and matured, I’ve learned how to just celebrate and enjoy the season of life that I’m in. And that’s what I want to encourage you to do.
